BRITISH RETAIL CONSORTIUM (BRC)
About the BRC Global Standards
The BRC Global Standards are a suite of four industry-leading Technical Standards that specify requirements to be met by an organisation to enable the production, packaging, storage and distribution of safe food and consumer products.
Originally developed in response to the needs of UK members of the British Retail Consortium, the Standards have gained usage world-wide and are specified by growing numbers of retailers and branded manufacturers in the EU, North America and further afield.
Certification to a Global Standard, which is achieved through audit by a third party Certification Bodies, reassures retailers and branded manufacturers of the capability and competence of the supplier, and reduces the need for retailers and manufacturers to carry out their own audits, thereby reducing the administrative burden on both the supplier and the customer.
ISO FOOD QUALITY
What is ISO 22000?
ISO 22000 sets out the requirements for a food safety management system and can be certified to it.
This quality standard maps out what an organisation needs to do to demonstrate its ability to control food safety hazards in order to ensure that food is safe.
ISO 22000 can be used by any organisation regardless of its size or position in the food chain.
INTERNATIONAL FEATURED STANDARD (IFS)
Principles
The International Featured Standard (IFS) is developed for all type of retailers (all sizes of companies and shops, independent or not) and for wholesalers with similar activities (e.g. cash and carry). They all have to ensure the safety of their “own branded” products they sell.
IFS helps to comply with all legal safety requirements and gives common and transparent standards to the all concerned suppliers as well as a concrete and strong answer to the high safety expectations of customers.
Goal
IFS covers common internationally accepted audit standards in order to improve continuously safety for the consumers. The IFS Food standard is approved by the Global Food Safety Initiative – GFSI.
IFS Food is a standard for the auditing of companies that process food or companies that pack loose food products. IFS Food is only applied where the product is ‘processed or handled’, or if there is a danger of product contamination during the primary packaging.
IFS Food is applied for;
1. processing of food and/or
2. handling of loose products and/or
3. activities undertaken during the primary packaging
HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point)
About HACCP
HACCP is a way of managing food safety hazards. Food safety management procedures should be based on HACCP principles.
HACCP involves:
- reviewing what you do in your business, what could go wrong and what risks there are to food safety
- identifying any critical control points the areas a business needs to focus on to ensure those risks are removed or reduced to safe levels
- deciding what action you need to take if something goes wrong
- making sure that your procedures are being followed and are working
- keeping records to show your procedures are working
It is important to have food safety management procedures that are appropriate for your business.
